Does anyone know where I can find a good tutorial on blending. I am planning on shaving my moulding, rear door handles and the trunk lid on my 96 civic and need to know how, and the best way to blend the surounding areas. Thanks!

If your doing all that shaving, it would be a much better idea to paint the whole car. Then it will insure a a perfect color and gloss match on the car.

Yea, I thought about that too. That is what I will most likely be doing. I just want to learn the blending technique though. Thanks!

there really isnt a tutorial on blending, you learn it by doing it. a quicky tutorial: spray your sealer just far enough to cover mudwork, bare metal, etc. spray a coat of base just to the point where your sealr stops, let flash, spray a second coat of base and pull it out a little further this time, let flash, your first and second coats may take more depending on if your working with a thin/transparent color. your last coat you want to take it out just a little even further than your last coat, and kind of "push" your base or kick it out. so the further away you are from your starting point, the less base your putting on, thus, blending what your spraying with your original color. you want your blend to be kicked out onto a bodyline or bodyroll or at a diagonal so that it will sort of trick your eye. otherwise you'll see your blending line. then go over the whole panel with some sort of color blender (i use PPG so that would be DBC 500). which will even everything out and cause your colors to flow out together.

by mudwork i meant primer

Thanks, that was really helpful! So what should I sand the surrounding area with that will be blended?

You sand the whole area that will be blended, because although your only blending that area, you have to clear the whole thing. Like if you were blending a fender, you sand the whole fender, do the blend, then clear the whole fender.

yup make sure u use some blend prep stuff and a scotch brite pad on the painted surface and sand ur primer w/ 320 or 600....

you can dry sand with a da on 800 then go over with red scotch brite, or use scuff n' clean from SEM with a grey scotch brite, dont use that crap from 3M in a red bottle it doesnt do crap but make everything smell like orange. then like james said, finish it in 400 dry or 600 wet, 320 does work, but to each his own. not sayin anyone does it shitty, they just do it differently

Thanks for all the help! I really have a better understanding of it now. I will practice on an old hood of mine.
