I had heard that FEMA is paying $5.00 per mile to tow RV's from Indiana to the southern states. It sounded like a great opportunity to make some money before i get married, so I looked into it. I was planning on financing a tow vehicle, upfitting it to tow RV's, and running back-and-forth nonstop for a few months. After looking into it, FEMA has contracted out shipping to several transport companies. now, I am all for a company trying to make a profit, but they are pocketing millions of (tax) dollars for doing absolutly nothing. The transport companies make $5/ loaded mile, but only pay the driver about $1.10/mile, and the driver has to use their own vehicle, pay for fuel, pay tax, and do all of the work. sorry for the long post, but I guess I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up. Just pissed that these companies are earning a huge profit and screwing the little man.

My neighbor was running generators and equipment from Mass down there right after Katrina. I know he was making $2,500 for a week of driving, plus meals, hotels, fuel, in a company truck. he was running with no permits, just a letter from FEMA. two times he got $10,000+ fines for being overweight and no permits.

I work at an RV dealership here in north AL and we had tons of calls from guys like yourself, interested in towing. I know there are several major Towing companies out there already that I'm sure had 'first dibs' on getting the tow jobs. Most of your RV manf's have particular companies they use to Haul their units, so I'm sure it was easier on everybody to just use the already proven companies. However, we sold several units off our lot to another RV dealer near by. He was getting them from us, prepping them for Generators, then hauling them down. So if I were looking to tow, I'd be contacting Dealerships, rather than the actual Manufact. of the trailer.
I saw probably 4 this holiday weekend on I65 south and that were carried by Hoosier Transit, which is the same company that delivers our units here at the lot.
I had heard some dealers down around the Gulf were paying up to $5.00/hr to run 'em from Dealerships say in AL, over to LA... but you were limited on X amount of trips you could make or like 2 trips a day per week... etc. There was a regulation on it, but it was still good money. Every delivery guy I've ever spoken to pays for his own gas, food, shelter on the road out of his own pocket, but they still bring home plenty of cheeze!
Start calling up dealerships maybe and see if you have any luck that way. Gotta feeling most everybodies got drivers by now though....
good luck
