So I hate electrical shit, because its the only thing that ever gives me problems. So my truck ran fine forever, swapped my alt and batt into a friends Mazda that needed a new alt and batt to run right. Got that truck running right, switched my alt and batt back to my truck and battery is drained after driving it once. Put a new battery in it tonight and when I hooked up the ground wire, it sparked like mad. Nothing works though, no lights, beeps, cant even raise the bags up. Nothing at all. Touched the wire on the alt that is held on by the nut while it was hooked to the batt and it was hot as hell. But still, nothing. Any suggestions? Truck is 40 miles from my house so Id like to have some ideas when I get back down to work on it. Thanks in advance!

sounds like a short,dawg...a big short, like a batt wire or unfused amp wire....or...have you been running your ground wire to your lugnuts again, jim.lol!!!

somethings crossed or you got a pinched wire or something check your main fuse should be the biggest one in your fuse block under the hood or real close to the battery its probably blown now after the sparks you talked about and i dont know those trucks that well but there may be a ground wire that hooks to the alt bracket if it didnt get hooked back up that could cause it because it only got ground from one side your alt housing works as its own ground

yea sounds like a main fuse its on the little block of fuses on the pass. fender well there are 2 nuts that hold it in though once i tried for over an hour to get that fuse out just to find out that its bolted on the sides lol. there are two little flaps on the sides that will open by using a flat blade screwdriver to pry it open

It isnt blown. It was one of the first things I checked.

And Brandon (hoppncavy) it was the lugnuts jackass.....it was the driveshaft bolt!

the voltage regulator in your alt has gone bad. its internal, so you need to replace the alt.

Check the output of the alt by using a VOM to measure the voltage at the battery with the engine off, and then with the engine on. Chances are, they will be the same voltage off or on.

The big volatge draw is coming from the diodes in the alt going bad and allowing a dead short.

or you got the battery cables on backwards. just a thought i know a lot of people that have done that.

I thought of that, but he said he drove it.

I drove it, parked it. It wouldnt crank. I know the battery had a dead cell so I have to take it back anyways. However, I have a few batteries in my shop, I charged one up that I know works fine, and this is when I started not getting anything at all. Battery isnt hooked up backwards.

i still say its a pinched wire i pinched my battery ground once and thats what happened i could drive it all day long but as soon as i parked it for more than a couple of hours it was dead
