Good settings are .007" intake and .008" exhaust. It is best for them to be a little tight than a little loose, when they are loose the cam lobe comes up and bangs into the cam follower which if too much can destroy the cam, rocker arms, and valves in less than 10,000.

When doing the lash adjust all the rockers between the lash adjustor and the valve tip. When done crank the engine around 2 or 3 times by hand and then use a gauge .001" larger than what you used to set them and make sure it doesn't pass through. If it does re-adjust it and recheck with the .001" larger gauge. Many people don't check their lash after they check it and complain of excessive ticking and have damaged their valvetrains. (A little tick is normal with full mechanical rockers.)
