The other day I put my B2600i in neutral and went to put it back into first, the shifter went waay off to the left all loose, and couldn't find first gear. I think I found 3rd but then after a couple tries I couldn't find any gears at all. It used to grind the gears now and then downshifting... what could be some reasons the shifter is all loose? I think the shifter linkage is still all connected but I'm not positive there. Looking for alternative possibilities!

I had a mazda MPV with a 2.6 FI that did the same thing right after I sold it, the dude called me 20 min after I left his house, said he couldn't find any gears, turned out that he wasn't pushing the clutch in all the way and the shifter popped out. its like a ball and socket, pretty quick fix.

arg ok now I'm mad I wrote like this whole 10 paragraph post and when I clicked post it just disappeared so this will be much more brief.

Take the shifter out and make sure nothing weird and easy to fix happened in there. If that looks ok you will need to drop the tranny and remove the tail housing. The shifter lever probably came out of the feet for the clutch forks shown below:

You can use the page below as a guide on taking the housing off and inpecting it. Note that the page was written to show how to modify the tranny and it hasn't been updated in a long time but it should still help.
