I bought the lincoln weldpak 3200 from home depot. It does both gas or flux cored. about $400 but worth every penny i say!.

I about a linconl 145 at lowes for 400... Really nice includes all fittings and guages for gas and is flux compadable. Now I brought a body work issue up about massive sheet metal warp or waves after weld some things smooth. I was told the big reason was that I was using the flux core rather than gas. So maybe you shouldnt even look at flux core welders and buy a general gass welder with some tanks for 300 in a trading post or such.... thats what I would do if I was to rebuy a welder. Good luck

I bought a lincoln 170t in 1998 and it still works beautifully. The new model is the 175 plus, same welder just 5 more amps and infintely variable range heat.

My thoughts at the time were not of "whats the cheapest way to get what I need?" but more of "what can I buy that will never need upgrading or replacement?". I bought a gas kit right away because you have to do more finish work to a flux core weld. With the gas bottle, cart and some extra tips and wire, it was just under 800.

Evaluate what you will be doing. If you are tired of borrowing or renting a welder from someone every time you need to do the smallest thing, you should probably buy your own. If you want to improve your skills and do good work on yours and others cars, you should buy a good welder. If you only plan to maybe do 1 or 2 things, ever, keep renting or borrowing.

Also I paid $500.00 for it off the snap-on truck. It was a trade in. Already had the gas regulator, and a cart.

also, in 1998 I never thought I would be building my own stock floor chassis. But in 2004 I did, and I am glad I had the amperage and duty cycle of a 220v welder to do it. I would have run a smaller 110v welder at full speed/heat and waited for the duty cycle to catch up.

If you are prone to fits of creativity, plan for the unexpected.

go with the miller div thats what i got and its bad ass you can weld aluminium. its got the plug conversion to make it 110 or 220 for stronger welds. its a little pricey at about 1200 bucks but well worth it. oh year you can do chrome alley too
