I have a question, can any one tell me how a check valve works and what is it for. I have a compresser that leeks and was wondering if a check valve would stop the air in my tank from leeking out of my compresser.

yup you should have one on there anyways...it'll save the seals in you compressor...check valve only allows air to flow in one direction...that is its only purpose

YUP PUT A CHECK VALVE AFTER YOUR COMPRESSOR IT WILL ALLOW THE AIR TO FLOW 1 WAY ONLY AND WON'T ALLOW THE AIR TO BACK FEED AND THAT SHOULD CURE THE LEAK.

its like a flapper valve

i just got one that has an unloader built in so once the compressor stops pumping it releases the pressure between the valve itself and the compressor head...its supposed to help the compressor start up easier assuming yours isnt leaking like crazy. Grainger has them its called a Load Genie by control devices

part number 5a705
