I did stereo for 12 years, and the one thing I found was you could power your highs with a golf cart battery mounted in a trash can and they would still sound decent, as long as you spent good money on your sub amp.
It has to do with the frequencies the amp is called on to reproduce, the low end freqs are BIG, and need lots an lots of power from a beefy power supply. Mid and high, you arent really asking any real work of an amp powering the highs.
Not knocking your decision, but you have it backwards. The Lanzar Opti 50 in 1997 cost 359 bucks. For 50 watts. You could buy TWO "1000 watt" Lanzars for that now. Zed audio made some of the best amplifier designs in the world. Then Lanzar saw dollar signs and sold out to the cheap japanese producers.
