Im having a problem with my 89 toyoya, 22R, its got 130K on it. When i start my truck up cold, it smokes. And when i am shifting through the gears(manual) it will backfire when i let off the gas. It idles REALLY rough, like its going to die.

But as soon as my temperature gauge registers anything, all the problems go away. Some people say that the carb is dumping to much fuel, some say that the spark plugs are going bad and not burning it all.

The only thing is, i replaced the plugs about 3 months ago, and the carb was rebuilt about a year and a half ago.

Any suggestions on what it could be? im lost...

Change the thermosate, the engine is running to cold, it may be stuck open!!

but it shouldnt be smoking right away, it smokes AS SOON AS i turn the key... when its cold, its cold. I could understand if it was happening after a while, but it shouldnt smoke right away.

This may soud dumb but have you done a compression test or checked your head gassket also check your vac lines I had mine crossed on my 22re

ya, i did a compression test. I checked the oil/coolant and everything. I dont think my vac lines are crossed, it just started one day. The day before it was fine, parked it, and the next day it started.
