When I had my 2wd bed I just welded the whole tailgate on. Welded a piece of metal in between the rollpan and tailgate and used body filler for the rest.

leave the tailgate intact it will be soo much stronger that way. you can then weld the inside to the bed floor too.

use some angle steel and weld it solid. u still may get cracks over time. but anything is going to crack that isnt suppsoed to be done.

I would say put in a skin .... they sell them for a reason....I was told by Musso Motorsports here in Las Vegas that they put skins in becasue a tailgate is heavy and even though you weld it in it will have vibrations and eventually crack at the top or more. A skin is closer to the same thickness of your body....I would use a skin. By the way if anybody is interested I have a skin for a 99+ chevy silverado from grant kustoms, selling it cheap, hit me up if your interested.-rj

yea a skin with a 1x1 box tubing frame to brace the bed and then skin the inside with sheetmetal. thats the best way.

I'm pretty sure they dont make skins for that truck.

Grant does make skins for that truck. You just have to use the upper rail from your stock tailgate.
