First of all, where do you live? There are only a handful of states that require handgun registration. Next question would be, who did you buy it from or where? There are certain avenues you should take when buying a handgun "Cash & carry" to protect yourself in instances when you might suspect ANYthing could cause a problem. If you want to have the proper paperwork done, so the pistol is in your name, you'll first need to make sure you can legally possess a handgun, then contact the sheriff, and explain the situation. They will more than likely check the serial # of the pistol, have you fill out the paperwrok as if you were buying the gun, run a call in background check, which will take 5 minutes, and that should be it. Don't quote me on this, for I don't know thw laws of every state, just FL, and now PA. It's a really smart thing to do, to go on your states website and read up on all gun laws if you are a gun owner.
