I bought my self a 1990 chevy 1500 to tow my mazda and I can't figure out why the brakes make a loud skretch when I come to a complete stop.. I had the drums turned and there is new pads on the rear but its slowly comming back lol. I did a flip kit in the rear and a guy around town is trying to tell me that him truck did the same thing after flipping the rear end ?!?!?!?!Any help would be appreciated thanks.

Could it be the wear indicator on the front caliper? AKA: the squeeker? When your pads get low on the front theres a little metal tab that hits the rotor causing a screetching sound. That may be what it is but i could be wrong. I have been before. LOL!

some do a low pitch hum type noise in the rear when you flip em... dunno why though, kinda like the infamous chevy lean....

but as for your problem.. where is the "scretching" noise coming from? front or rear? if its the front then its probably what ^he said. if its the rear and makeing a high pitched noise theres something in there that shouldnt be.

and just fyi... its got shoe3s in teh rear on those not pads( unless somebody has done a discbrake conversion)

it could also be something in the e-brake shit.

mine did that for a while,

the low pitch hum when you do a flip kit, isn't that from bad pinion angle? Hrm.

I suggest bagging it.

JUST SO HAPPENS, I WORK FOR THE 2ND LARGEST BRAKE DISTRIBUTOR IN THE COUNTRY, SO HOPEFULLY I CAN HELP YOU OUT. 1ST, AND YOU PROBOBLY ALREADY KNOW THIS, BUT YOUR REAR HAS SHOES, NOT PADS. (DRUMS=SHOES, ROTORS= PADS.) ANYWAYS, HAVE YOU IDENTIFIED WHICH AXLE IT'S COMING FROM (FRONT OR REAR)? YOU SAID YOU HAD THE DRUMS TURNED AND NEW PADS PUT ON IT....... HOPEFULLY YOU BOUGHT A PAD THAT HAS SHIMS, IF IT DOESN'T TRASH 'EM BECAUSE THEY ARE JUNK. GO WITH EITHER A BENDIX OR CENTRIC "POSI-QUIET" PAD IN THE FRONT AND A BENIDX OR CENTRIC SHOE IN THE REAR. THE BENDIX'S COME W A LIFETIME WARRANTY AND THE CENTRIC'S WITH A 2 YEAR. IF YOU TOW WITH IT ALOT, MAKE SURE YOU GET A BEN. SUV TYPE PAD OR A CENTRIC SEVERE DUTY PAD. BOTH OF THOSE PADS ARE TOP NOTCH AND WON'T MAKE ANY NOISE. NEVER, NEVER BUY A SHOE OR PAD FROM CHECKER OR AUTOZONE. THEY ARE FAR FROM GOOD AND ARE MADE FROM SCRAP PIECES THAT CENTRIC AND BENDIX SELL OFF TO COMPANIES LIKE RAYBESTOS ETC. THEY WILL DO NOTHING BUT GIVE YOU PROBLEMS, AND WILL RUN YOU ABOUT THE SAME AMOUNT OF MONEY FOR THEIR "GOOD" PAD OR SHOE. GO TO A BRAKE PART SUPPLIER AND GET SOME GOOD PADS AND SHOES, YOU'LL BE GLAD YOU DID.

colin I have the same problem. I have a 90 w/ a flip in the back to make a 7" drop Mine squeaks really bad to. Theres a spray that shuts it up but it only works for about a month. Maybe its the shoes but im doubtful.

I have the same year/model truck - had flip kit to achieve 6" drop prior to body drop(driven daily for 6 years) never had those noises - even when I wore out the rear shoes so bad they wore two grooves about 1/4" deep all the way around the drum. I always purchased my parts through the brake shop in town.
