It depends on your smog laws really. Here in CA its pretty strict. I've heard about the block needing to be within 4 years of the vehicle, bu tnot sure on that. I do know that the fuel delivery technology needs to be the same or newer than the vehicle was originally equipped with, and all smog components need to be there and in working order. I think ti would be cool to do it to my trukc some day, but I'd probably have to go EFI to get away with it here. Would be a shit load of work to pass smog in CA. Oh, you also have to get it refereed. If the Smog Referee says it looks legit, he will give you some type of permit that says your truck should be smogged as the vehicle the motor is otu of. So say you got it out of a '94 Camaro. When you take your Toyota to the smog station, they will smog it like a Camaro.
