powder doat is a bithc to get off. but it can be done. The easiest way to do it is to take it to the powdercoating shop ur gonna deal with and let them bake the old coating off and they can prep it for the new color for as well

you can get it off with acetone or lacquer thinner powder coat is plastic and the chemicals will melt it

I used to work in a shop that did some powdercoating. The best way to get it off, is with aircraft stripper. Its like $8 a gallon at the auto parts store. Also get some rubber gloves, and a cheap brush. Pour some into a cup or something (disposable) and use the brush to cover the powdercoated part with the aircraft stripper. No let it sit in the sun for about 20 minutes, then hose it off. You may have to do it more than once, but it will come off cleanly.

And DO NOT get it on your hands! That shit burns bad.

have it sandblasted off

sandblast sounds good. iv got acess to a fairly big cabinet at a shop i used to work at. i can also go over that frame when its all clean and look for cracks with all the powder coat off.

can it be powdercoat right over the existing stuff?

aircraft stripper is the best idea. sandblasting can pit the metal. i wouldnt do anything with sand nowdays, only plastic media. aircraft stripper is the coolest shit ever too.

Unless you have some coarse ass stuff in the blaster it will merely flatten the powdercoats finish.

And you can powdercoat over the existing coating, but you take the chance of it not turning out well. Sometimes it works well, and sometimes it goes blotchy or bubbles.

FYI checker auto parts has some air craft stripper that i tried. (mar-hyde brand i can get the Part# if anyone wants) it worked wonders. i sprayed it on, went to the quarter machine and got quarters and then pressure washed it off. it worked pretty good considering that it only sat on the powder coat for a few mins. which brings me to another question....wether the coating i was removing was really powder coating or not.

carb cleaner and wal-mart brand air craft stripper didnt do anything but clean the surface. scratching it with the edge of a key would go through some of it but not to metal. who knows. it was so damn ugly it had to come off.
