best way to do it? I unbolted it and cleaned the edges, but there is a huge gap around it. I was planning on using the door as the filler plate.. is that how you guys do it? or do you make a filler plate out of something else?

unfold the lip around the door then it should fill the gap

No...thats wrong...ive done this idea before...many times u will ALWAYS get ghost handles..(ull see them threw ur paint) best way to do it is cut out the peice of the body in a square around w/e ur shavin..and replace that whole peice with of steel and weld in the squarecomes out 100 times cleaner and realy is less work cuz its jsut a square..AND on a mazda the body is so flat ud barely have to bend the filler peice..check out www.krazykreativecustoms.com on there projects section to understand what i mean...GOOD LUCK!!

im with these guys cut a square section out around your gas door and cut a square to fit back in. I was lucky enough to have access to a another bed that i cut a square out of to fill mine up with. using the sheet metal from the other bed helped me keep the contour. heres a pic of where my stock door ended up.
