My cell is leaking around the sending unit. I had one made and used the stock sending unit and it leaks around there a little but. It is not a huge amount but enough to piss you off. What can I use to keep this from happening?? Anyone have any ideas. BTW, this is on a 2002 Taco. Thanks!

Is it a prefab cell or a custom cell? Either way if you are just screwing the sending unit down to the thin top of the cell it might be warping the top bad enough that the gasket will no longer seal properly. Usually I machine a thicker ring and weld it to the top of the cell where the pump/sender will bolt too. This way it gives plenty of material to bolt it to and will not warp.

I have a question about fuel cells. What do you use for a gasket when bolting the sending unit in. I am cutting the stock tank and clamping the sending unit to the cell. What would be a good gasket. Kind of similar to your question. I don't want it to leak.

They used to make gasket material in sheets, kind of like paper. Not sure if they make it anymore but you just cut your own gasket out of that stuff. Permatex gasket maker if its fuel resistant. Go to your local parts store and take a look. If you can't find it ask them they might know of something.

I use gasket sealer that is approved for fuel use. It come in a tube. you put it around the hole and set the sending unit over it. Then screw it down and it make a rubber seal. You just have to make sure it will work with gas. Other wise the gas just eats the seal away. I am sure using a ring like chris allred does on his is better but I wasn't able to do that at the time I put my cell in.

The thicker ring just keeps the thinner fuel cell material (aluminum, stainless, or steel) from warping when the screws/bolts are tightened up. You still need a gasket inbetween.

I just had this problem and had used permatex in the past (which was eaten away after a few months, and leaves a mess to scrub off of everything). So I saw on youtube that a guy made a gasket out of used bike innertubes. So I tried it out, traced the pattern onto the sliced in half innertube and cut it out. I tried with 1 layer, but that leaked. So I used 2 layers and that did the trick. I dont know if it will last forever or stand up to the heat and gas, but it is working so far. Hope this helps anyone else who is having this issue, I searched a lot of forums looking for an answer.
I got the innertube free from a bike shop, just went in and told them I was going to cut it up so they gave me a used one. So it doesnt cost you $$$$.
