when swapping out brake boosters does it matter engine size 5.4 versus 4.0?

i dont understand what your asking? i know the 4.0 booster for an explorer is smaller.

My engine is a 5.4, the brake booster that im swapping with is off a 4.0 engine. Does that matter?

nah... ive got a brake booster out of a geo metro modified to go in my ranger and it is much smaller than the stock ranger one. and im not just doing it and giving it a try, ive actually heard of people doing it a few times without any problems at all. the reason im doing it is because of the clearance issues up there.

IM RUNNING THE 4.0 BOOSTER ON MY 4.6L F150. BEEN ON THERE FOR ABOUT A YEAR. CAN'T TELL A DIFFERENCE AT ALL. ONLY THING YOU'LL HAVE TO DO IS EXTEND THE PUSH ROD YOUR BRAKE PEDAL MOUNTS TO. SHOULDN'T TAKE MORE THEN AN HOUR ITS AN EASY SWAP. BUT YOU WON'T HAVE ANY PROBLEMS. THE ORIGINAL MASTER CYLINDER WILL BOLT UP TO THE NEW BOOSTER TOO SO THAT WILL SAVE YOU TROUBLE. GOOD LUCK
