I recently shaved a gas door on a splash. What I done was the following in prety much order.
I removed gas door, and cut out the inside area where the neck mounts .
I then usesd 36 grit and sanded the inside and outside of the bed sides. Mind you easy to do with bed side off.
I then layed tape over the outside opening a few layers thick to seal the hole.
I then proceded with fiberglass resin and sheets of glass mat covering the inside of the panel over lapping the glass onto the sides about 2 inches all the way around. I did this step twice and sanded with 36 grit between dry layers and new layers to promote adhesion.
I removed the tape from the outside and added a 3rd layer over the outside once all layers were dry I sanded the outside down and then proceded to fill with tiger hair until close and then skimmed with Rage filler and finished of with a glaze and primer.
