spray the base until you have coverae, about 4 coats. spray a card along with the truck. you don't need to sand between the base and mid coats. just spray a let down panel on the card you already put base on. usually anywhere from 1-4 coats depending on the color you want. it will get darker with more coats. when you decide on the number of coats you want spray them on and then clear it as usual.

the only reason u would sand between mid and base coat, is if it got some dirt in it, if you are doing a complete, keep your passes nice and even and the same on both sides, and from front to back, so you dont get "tiger stripes" or darker and lighter areas........ if you are spraying a pearl white 3stage, take a spray out panel and spray it just like you would the car panels, and do ruffly 2 coats of pearl on top of the white, then take it outside and spray it with the pre-cleaner to get it wet so you can see how yellow it gets, if you want it darker/ yellower, spray the panel another 2 coats, take it outside, spray it again, and continue this process untill you get the desired color you like, and spray the whole car with the same amount of coats of pearl as you did the spray out card....
