code #172 on 4.3L S-10

anyone know what would cause this? I'm not very good with engine stuff but autozone told me that was the code my truck was giving, didn't give me any more information.

hey man code 172 is a system to rich code so its probly your o2 sensor i had the same thing happen to me and thats what it was

What does that mean?Basically this means that an oxygen sensor in bank 1 detected a rich condition (too little oxygen in the exhaust). On V6/V8/V10 engines, Bank 1 is the side of the engine that has cylinder #1.



heres the thing.. DO NOT go out and think its your o2 sensor... it possibly could be... best thing to do is to call the dealer and tell them you got the code from a mechanic (not autozone cause they will tell u 2 come up there and let them read it and charge u 100000000000 dollars) and ask what it means and what should you change... but if you want take the o2 out and clean it off a lil with carb cleaner

i cleaned out my MAF sensor and the code hasn't came back

i wouldve checked for a vacuum leak, i see it all the time at work

my advice, take what autozone told you and forget it. i've seen so many instances where they've told people one thing, they brought it into the shop i worked at, and that area (for lack of better terms) was fine and the problem was completely different. i had a throttle position sensor code pulled on my dodge from autozone, and i had a cracked distributor.
