Everyone I know with an 88-99 Chevy truck has had the auto trans go out on them. Is it just a bad design? Can they be made to last? How much heavier duty is the transmission in a dually of the same years? Are they more reliable the newer in years you get? This is my main reason to not consider anything but a 5spd truck. Are they all the NV4500?

I had a 4L80E lay down on me a couple of times and I replaced them with crate trannys from GM and B&M and they are still going strong today as far as I know.

5 speeds are pretty much indestructable as long as you do the maintenance and dont rough ride them...JM2C

ever heard the saying" my truck musta been the last truck built on a friday afternoon before the plent shut down" ? that sht e way trans missions are.... just hope that whoever whenever that one was built was paying attention

LOL j/k for the most part as long as you arent trying to tow a barn with you everywhere you go they are pretty durable... i have worked at a GM dealership for the past 10 years (damn thats a long timewhen you say it,makes me feel old) and in the mid 90s i bet we would sell 5 transmissions a month, and do as many repairs(burnt clutch disc/bands) but lately that has died down a bunch. we havent sold 5 trans all yr if i remem right, parts are just better theses days.

sorry for the long winded retard post but i was bored.

Not so much the Chevys, but I have heard of that with the Dodges running the Cummins. That motor just puts out too much juice for that trans.

the 4L80 holds up pretty good with moderate towing.

I've had the privlage of replacing more 700r's and 60e's then I ever did of the Th350,Th 400's

hmmm powerglides....indistructable and cheep to rebuild

More ofen than not its a case of the motor being too strong and the driver not knowing to let off a lil. Youd be suprised how many people hook up a fully loaded trailer and put it in overdrive and take off.

oh yea overdrive and a good mountain pass thats got walk'n written all over it

Ilove the smell of burnt automatic fluid on a hot summer day and you know its all over the front of your truck because that basturd in front of you will not pull over
