5.3 is a good start.. do you want to go carbed or efi?
you should check out the performance sites like
www.ls1tech.com and look around their classifieds and goto the 'truck' section and it sends to their sister site and check theirs. the 5.3 isnt desirable from a performance standpoint (well heads are on boost apps), but anyways, you can get a short or long block fairly cheap. a 700r4 will bolt right up and no use for the computer controled stuff, just get a painless lockup kit for it, if you want an auto.. if not, i'd get a t56 6 speed.
carb - long block, msd's standalone igintion setup and it comes with the coils, carbed intake for the LS1/Gen 3 style motors and of course a carb.
efi - complete swap including ecm, harness for the engine and it will come with one for the tranny. so get an auto motor if you want auto, manual motor if you want manual. also bet on sending your harness into speartech and having them do some work on it so its easier to wire into your existing setup. you will need to make motor mounts (this goes for both ways, carb or efi), they arent eh same sa the older smallblocks..
i'm sure i'm missing stuff.. but its a ton cheaper to go carb with one.
