I used to be into the 4X4 world with toyotas. (wich is 6 lug...so take this info for what it is worth). I have done a swap using a toyota 4X4 rear-end and keeping the same 6 lug pattern because I already had a set of 6 lug 20's.
I believe my axle is out of a 79 or 80 4x4 toyota. I cant remember the exact width but I know for a fact it was 1-2 inches narrower than my stock 95 pup rear axle. When toyota changed to IFS (4X4) in mid 1985, they made the rear-ends 3" wider to compensate for the extra width in the front due to the IFS. The (4X4) IFS rear-ends measure out to be 58" wide and the pre-IFS (solid front axle) rear-ends measure out to be 55". Inturn making it 1 inch narrower than stock pup rear-end.
JUST TO KEEP THINGS CLEAR
REMEMBER!!! EVERYTHING I JUST TALKED ABOUT WAS ALL 4X4 TOYOTA STUFF, NOT 2WD TOYOTA.
The swap worked out great for me due to my situation, but like I said in the beginning...take the info for what it's worth.
