I already have the axles what do I need to convert the front to 5-lug?Can I just redrill the hubs and use the older dakota disks? Thanks

i believe those trucks the hub and rotor is all one assembly. should be able to just get 87-90ish front rotors. unless this is a 4wd, then you should have about the right method. shouldnt be too hard, the first half of that generation was 5 lug. should be pretty easy to get parts. good luck

Can you use dakota calipers on a ram and vice versa

standard got it, the rotor and hub are one piece, and should be a direct bolt on from the earlier dakotas. and checking kragen, 98 kota to 98 ram the calipers are different

From 87 to 90 i believe it was it was a 5x4.5 bolt pattern. The rotors are just like on nissan hardbodies lugs and rotor are all one assembly, so all you need to do is get the front rotors from the auto store and they bolt right up. The wheel bearings are the same as well and the calipers line up.

only difference was the bolt pattern

The 5x4.5" pattern went al the way up to 91 I believe. I was also told by a couple of people that have done the swap that you need the pre-92 calipers as well, because the 92+ calipers were loose on the older hub assembly. I don't know how accurate that is though, but autozone shows different part numbers between the 2 years. I'm still debating on doing the swap myself.

i have researched this on the oreily website as far as part numbers go and the 92 dak and 87 dakota should swap no problem. but if you change out the rotor you should get new bearings and seals that way it doesnt fell "loose" if thats what he meant. i checked the rotor part# and the wheel bearings and seals part numbers. Different rotor #'s but bearings and seal #'s are the same for the 87 and the 92. im plannin the swap when i get new wheels. PS mine are for sale!!!

the important thing on doing this is making sure to not overtighten the bearing load. you do and you will screw yourself.

what you do is change out your inner and outer bearings. then put the new grease seal in. get the flange about level with the body of the hub. install it back on the spindle. put the big washer and the bit nut back on. get the big nut down to zero lash, not snug, just where the bearings are starting to touch. shouldnt have any (or very little) side to side play on the spindle. now back it off about a 1/4 turn. spin the rotor, should have a slight drag, but nothing much really. install the sheetmetal nut cover, then a NEW cotter pin of the correct size. after that, install the calipers and such. put the wheel on, then test drive it. feel the center of the wheel, if its more than a slight bit warm (roughly the same as any other part of the truck) go back and loosen the nut some. too tight and you will burn all the grease out and screw stuff up.

while you are changing stuff, i would go ahead and order up new calipers that are the same year as the 5 lug stuff (87-91). get new brake hoses too. easier to do it all now and know you have perfect front brakes than to ruin something and fix it later. and make sure to bleed the brakes out a few times. i just did all this on my ramcharger, except i didnt swap bolt pattern doing it. good luck.
