OK got my new distributor today. being the dumbshit that I am I forgot to mark the rotor when I pulled the old one so now I'm lost. i took a stab at it, and it sputters and spits and I atleast have spark now, but it won't run.So...what is the firing order of these trucks..1-3-4-2 ? Assuming #1 is the front cylinder. On the dist. cap, is it 1,2,3,4 clockwise from that little vent cap? if not what is it. My buddy decided to pull all the wires off at once for some reason when we were switching it.Now i need to get the truck to top dead center and set the rotor to fire cylinder 1 right? OK the timing marks on the front go 0II IIT...do i line the notch on the balancer up with the 0, the space or the T?

anything else i know or any tricks to make this easier. If only i'd marked that rotor this thing would be running tonight. such an idiot.

Take out the timing cover. It's held in by two screws. The pully is numbered and so turn it (make sure the ground from the battery is disconnected),till the number one is @ the very top (TDC). As far as the timing, it goes 1-2-4-3

great, well a guy on bscene said 1-3-4-2. so which is it and whats the order on the cap?

i am so damn frustrated with this pile...

the cam pully is numbered for advancing and retarding the cam timing (thanks Ken at mazdatruckin.com). This can be proven with logic, because the cam rotates half as fast as the crank. There is a timing mark on the pulley that will line up with a mark on the pulley cover.

The firing order of a mazda is in fact 1-3-4-2 just like most production 4 cylinder engines (for balance). I have never seen a car engine with 1-2-4-3....

If you want to be absolutely sure, pull the plugs and run a stiff wire into the #1 hole so it gets pushed out as the piston comes up. Make sure to rotate the engine till the piston is at TDC AND both #1 valves are shut. With the plugs out it is easy to turn the motor.

Then you stick the dizzy in so that the rotor points at the notch on the dizzy, it may take a few tries to get it, being one tooth off can be the difference between good running and poor running. Put the cap on, and the plug wire that lines up with where the rotor is will be #1. Next will be 3, then 4, then 2

awesome. thanks russ. hopefully i can get er all squared up tomorrow.

it takes practice to get the distributor in, because the gears are twisted, so if you stick it in with the rotor pointing at the notch it will be off by the time the distributor gear meshes with the cam gear.

Luckily though, once or twice through and you will get the hang of pre-spotting the rotor so it lines up with the notch when its seated.

Got it 2nd try. Thanks alot.

was going to say if that don't work you can go to autozone.com and the firing order for most vehicles are on there.
