looking for a little help in Texas. I need to change the bearing in the rear end of my truck. I think it is the pinion bearings. so does anyone have any experience in this field?

pull the axles, remove the chunk (gears), remove the nut from the pinion gear, remove pinion gear, replace pinion sill, and reverse steps..... follow that?

is it really that easy? I thought you had to shim the rearend and get the backlash right

i checked the gear oil for metal and there was nothing, you can move the yoke a little and i was told it was the bearings going out. not sure.

Setting pinion depth is crutial. Unless you have the tools and know how to read/use them have somone else do it.

If the gears have not been worn from the bearing being lose then you can replace the bearing using the shims that were installed from the factory just make sure to get a new crucsh sleeve and nut for the pinion. It is a pretty straight forward job but it would help to have someone who has some experience when you are ready to crush the sleeve and check the gear mesh.
