Your going to want to make the links as long as you can to get the most travel.

I made my bottom links 30 inches long if I remember correctly, they are only about 6 or 7 inches behind the cab. I get 14 inches of lift with the bag mounted a little more than halfway up the bar, and no pinion change throughout. Pics in my profile.
