I have this idea and i want to know how to make it work out... i want to eliminate my head unit and just use my ipod with a cable running out of the ipod headphone jack, into a set of RCA's and then into an amp to power my highs, i dont have any subwoofers or anything so im thinkin this may all work out... my buddy told me that i need the remote wire to make the amp work... now im all confused can anyone simpifly this for me?

that's easy. just take the 12v lead that powers up your head unit and attach it to your amp - whollaah. no big deal.

is there anything else that i would need to run besides a power wire to the amp? im new at car audio stuff and im trying to learn....sorry

You probably won't like the sound. ipods and other mp3 players have the output tuned primarily for headphones, and don't have the same bass and treble adjustments (as well as fade and balance) you need to make a car stereo sound good. With how cheap cd players have gotten lately (we have a DVD head unit for $129 on our site!), there's really no reason NOT to have one.
But, if you are set on trying it, you just need to hook your power leads to the battery, your ground to a solid chassis ground, and the remote wire to a (+) from your ignition switch so the amps turn off when you shut the car off. You can get headphone to RCA cables from Radio Shack, and you're good to go.
Good luck!

why not just hide the headunit? mount it in a center console or something with a cover, and the ipod wire running through it. Like Phil ^^^ said, you won't be able to adjust your sound to sound right. You need the functionality of the head unit.

damn i never thought about not being able to controll the sound quality....i guess ill just buy a good headunit....

wheres this DVD headunit located on your site?

COULDNT YOU RUN IT THOUGH A EXTERNAL EQUILIZER? BUT I GUESS IF YOUR GONNA SPEND THE MONEY ON ONE OF THOSE, YOU MIGHT AS WELL JUST GET A HEADUNIT AND HIDE IT LIKE THOSE OTHER GUYS SAID.

Yeah like the others said, the quality wouldn't be there. The ipod doesn't have a large enough voltage output either. It might work ok with a eq like mentioned as well. you'll be much happier though with a head unit.

YOU CAN BUY AN EQ WITH BASS AND VOLUME CONTROL
