I had a '91 Super-duty flatbed with a 5-speed I used to run around in when I was working for my Dad. I kept her real clean. Plus, she had Alcoas on her. They make good power and mine was real reliable, but don't expect to get anywhere quick.
The older motors are just that...old. The pre-Powerstroke Navistar engines you will get in those Fords are good engines, but just keep in mind, it's an old diesel. It's a far cry from their new, turbocharged counterparts.
The Powerstrokes/Cummins/Duramax's are a new breed of diesel. That's what most folks expect out of a diesel engine nowadays. A lot of these people have never driven an older, N/A diesel-powered truck.
I liked mine. And that says a lot coming from a Chevy guy.
Like I said, it was very reliable, and we never had to do any major repairs. I think I had somewhere in the neighborhood of 275 k on it, and she was still running strong when Pops got rid of her. I still see her running around town today. I kinda miss her...
If you really want a Powerstroke, I THINK they started producing the 7.3's in '95. I THINK. I'm sure someone will correct me.
