what kind of foam are we talking about?

If it the Laundau top foam (closed cell foam) like was said you can sand it with something around 100 grit paper. be carefull not to chunk it. keep the edge of the paper off the foam. take your time there is a "coating" on it you need to go thru then its easy.

I would take a straight edge rasor blade and cut a bevel along the panel edge to make it a little easier to taper. you can sand a round on the edge or even feather it out to nothing if you want.

the foam can be trimmed even with the edge of the panel board. Use a sharp single edge razor blade. As you pull the material around the edge of the board, use caution so that you don't get any uneven draws in your cover material. You want to concentrate on a smooth, even edge. The panels can be fastened to the doors with trim screws through the panel, or with trim clips in the existing holes in the door from the original door panels. Also if you are using wood for the panel, make sure you glue a plastic liner (a trash bag works) to the inside of the door behind the door panel to keep moisture off the wood. Gook luck.
