I know there has probably been another post about this but heres goes. I am looking to to quit my job and go back to school to refine my welding skills and possibly start my own business. so my question is has anyone else on here been to any of them and what did you learn from it? Also i have been looking at going to Lincoln Electric as it is local and is supposedly the best in the industry for training. i have alot of friends that left straight out of high school and went to a tech school only to get fucked. i cant afford to have this happen as i may be burning a bridge (I hope they understand) with my current employer that treats me very well. i just want something different for my self. Any advice would be much appreciated. thanks in advance!

I am starting welding school in jan at the local tech school, just to learn more about welding and its free for me. The Lincoln school sounds like a good deal. I have a lincoln welder and I love it. As far as your own business, Be very careful. thier is a lot of Tax laws and business lic. you will need to know. Nomatter what you do, don't leave your current employer hanging. You may need to go back to them. Also if you are starting your own business, you wouldn't want someone doing you that way. You may want to work as a welder and look into classes for small business. Just my two cents, Anyway good luck.

If it was easy everone would be doing it.

Good advice. I dont plan on leaving them hanging. i was going to give actually about a 4 month notice and offer to train the next guy. I'm not sure if I'm gonna burn a bridge but i know that its a possiblity that they won't understand. As far as starting a business from all this goes I am really not 100% sure thats even what i want to use my welding skills for. but that is my ultimate dream i guess. Starting a custom shop/fab shop in cleveland would be rough because our economy is shit and so is our scene at the moment. But either way i think schooling/certification is going to help me in the long run. I just dont want to get burned by a tech school like so many of my friends did.

You are on the right track. Today continuning education is a must if you want to keep up and be conpetitive. If you give more than two weeks notice and offer to train a new guy, then you done your part. Running your own busniess is harder than working for someone eles. I was in the resturant busneiss and it sucked.

Yeah, i just hope that i can succeed in the region i'm in. clevelands scene isnt very big at the moment. either way i already have the tools i just need to learn to use them all to make some cash. i think i might start up just bagging shit out of my garage once the cutlass is done and just keep handing out business cards till word spreads. I also hope my cutlass works well as a calling card to draw some work in. its not everyday you see a cutlass layin on 20/22's so i think potential customers will feel comfortable with me cuttin their shit up lol. either way i'll be in school in a month or two. thanks for the advice bro.
