depends on where you want to be a cop, I am in North Carolina and here the state requires that every officer is BLET certified, so you have to go through a 680 hour training course before you can become an officer, but every state has different requirements.

Some places say you have to have a degree others that you only need a GED, check with the specific department you want to apply with for their requirements (if course the more you have as far as education and experience the better you will be)

in texas you need to be tclese certified as a basic peace officer and the minimum of a GED in some agencies. a lot of the larger cities you need atlease 60 college hours with a minimum of a 2.0 average. on the college the minimum varies from 15 hrs,30 hrs and so one. then you have agencies that will wave the college if you have military with honorable discharge or 2 year of street experience. just to be elegable to work you connot be convicted of a felony or b misdemeanor, need good credit, stable work history and pass a entrance exam usually a civil service test here in texas, then you have to pass a phyical agility test then pass a background investigation. one small city started off at 41,000. so depends on the economics of that city if there is money within the city for the police department. yes i am a peace officer here in TX and still looking for work.

so why you want to be a cop?

I love the job, but I can tell you its not for everyone, you're gonna see alot of shit that will strain you mentally and will stress the HELL out of you (I'm talking about car wrecks with fatalities including babies and kids, rapes, murders, and lots of other stuff), but for me like I said I love the job.

The pay is higher here for having a degree, and you need to have at least an associates to be promoted to sergeant, a bachelors to make lieutenant and up.

Plus its a job where people are going to hate you just because you wear blue, you're going to be stereotyped, cussed at, punched, and sometimes shot at and you are expected to maintain your cool through it all and be nice to people...

Definatly. during the last hurricane my mom called me and asked where we had gone to because my town was evacuated, I had to explain to her that when everybody else is ordered out, we call in everybody with a badge to work (our department doesnt stop patrol until the wind hits 90+ mph)
