My buddy is a plumber and wants me to do a side job with him running black pipe gas lines. and he needs all the elbows welded up. what would be the best method, best wire, or rod. etc. thanks for your help.

that would all depend on the type of pipe cast or steel or forged i do not recommend weldin them at all by county regulations gas lines cannot be welded where i am so i have never welded that style of pipe. what happens if you need to take that joint apart after you get gas in there

y does he need them welded? unless you tig them (if you can TIG black pipe)they will leak.

Yeah those should not be welded. Every Lowes and Home Depot can thread pipe. I'ts easier to seal if i't threaded too. Getting an airtight seal by welding can be a pain in the ass.

My uncle welds gas lines for PG&E for a living. On the 4" and smaller pipes, 1/4" wall or less he uses MIG. He brings side projects home on the weekends, and makes manifolds. I've watched him do it. He removes all the paint, then goes over the surfaces to be welded with a hardstone. He welds them really hot, and goes in and chanfers the weld with a hardstone and welds it up again. He does this on every seam. Then pressurizes the manifold, and checks for leaks with soapy water. Any he finds get chanfered and re welded until there are no leaks.

And the huge shit at work, they use stick welders.

i would recommend getting someone to thread the pipe, or getting a pipe thread die kit (harbor freight sells them), a small gas leak can be a HUGE problem..... im saying that since you have no experience doing it..... home depot sells alot of different lengths of pipe already threaded, with tons of fittings.....
