My buddy picked up a 90 or 91 yota beater to use as a utility truck instead of having to hook up the trailer whenever we need metal etc. So we're planning to flat deck it with a metal rack on the roof etc. Hes workign on getting it mechanically sound right now and we're having a hell of a time with the brakes. There is just no pedal at all. Right to the floor. So far he replaced a bunch of rusted lines, we have bled the system and he even tried a new master cylinder. Still no luck. Not sure what else it could be. We cant find any leaks in the system anywhere.Any ideas??

what bout the slave cylinder, maybe drawing air...?

you sure the vacuum line is hooked up to the booster. I forgot to hook mine back up and couldnt figure out why i didnt have brakes. that was the reason.

Maybe the booster itself is bad?

Would the booster cause that though, or would you just lose the luxury of power brakes? Like there is no pedal.

there are many answers to this question. it could be one of many things. get inside the cab, lay on u'r back in the floorboard and look up at the pedal and all its linkages. make sure the pedal is pushing the rod thru the firewall into the master clyinder. i had 300k miles on one of my toyotas and the plate where the brake linkages were welded to the firewall broke off the firewall and i lost brakes completely. i couldn't tell a difference in pedal pressure or hear anything but i finally got under the dash and looked and the 4 tack welds were broken. i welded the plate back to the firewall and got brakes again. also there is a check valve in the vacuum line going from the booster to the motor/valve cover. those plastic check valves go bad, check it. take it off and see if you can suck thru it. if so, go to the nearest auto shack and pick you up one. you may beed to bleed the brakes more. you might have a faulty booster and/or master cylinder. the rear drums could be messed up and you are losing all your pressure thru them. try all of the other stuff first and then take your rear drums off and inspect their wear and linkages

If you didn't bleed the master cylinder properly, it may not build pressure. You have to prime them before you connect the lines to it, or it'll just draw air.
From there, try plugging the line to the rear brakes to see if the fronts work by themselves. Just put a plug in the master cylinder where the rear line normally connects.
If the fronts aren't working, check to make sure the calipers are on the right way!! I installed some Ford F150 calipers upside-down (left caliper on the right side, and vice-versa) after having them powdercoated, and it sucked!! The bleeder needs to be the highest point on the caliper, or they won't bleed properly.

Good luck with your beater- they're fun!!

OK well he took the bleeder off the proportioning valve and is was all full of big chunks of rust and shit. Got it all cleaned out, re-bled the system and it seems to be good now. Thanks guys.
