i want to narrow my diff i put into my mazda project i'm building. my question is can i respline my stock axles? i'm looking to narrow the diff 4 inches per side. just wondering if anyone has done this before or if you just have to go buy new axles?

if its a toyota rear end you can get the axles resplined but it is not a reliable method. on toyota's they weld them up and respline it cause the axle shaft is tapered so they have to weld it up before they respline it. you can come out just as cheap and be a lot stronger if you just buy new axles. any reputable rear end and driveline shop will tell you that the safest most reliable way to go it buying new axles. i got mine from strange engineering. jackson powertrain in jackson mississippi built my rear end, put new gears in and a limited slip unit. i haven't had a minutes trouble out of the whole shabang. i love it. hope you get yours right wether it be resplining or buyin new axles. good luck either way.

I'd probably buy new axles. How wide do you need the rearend to be? Because the 73-78 Toyotas came with a 53" wide axle.

I am getting ready to narrow my toy axle 10.5 for the nissan. I have talked to a few people and they say if you gonna run stock motor respline is ok but if anything bigger get new ones. Im getting new ones.. just dont want any trouble.

ya i'm more leaning towards the new axles as there not too expensive. i'm looking to narrow the rear end 9.500 inches so even the older toyota diff would still be too wide. thanks for that idea. and from anyone experience can you run any of the 4x4 3rd member parts in the 2wd 3rd member?

I know that there are two different kind of diffs that come in 2WD trucks. A 7 5/8" axle, and a 7 3/4" axle. Thats about all I know. I kind of doubt 4wd parts are interchangeable.

ahh thats shitty, cause the decent gears that the 4x4 stuff uses is cheap and easy! oh seth i did that disc conversion already and i should have pics this week. turned out really well

Yea its pretty easy. The only hard part really is cutting off the drum backing plates. Lol.

toyaota rear ends are alot narrower then mazda's, why do u wat to shorten it?
gryte_racing   +1y
i need to shorten it so the wheels don't stick out into the rear windows. any yes i mean rear window's, the truck had the extended cab cut off and the front of the box was cut off and all welded together and a s10 blazer roof was put on it. that and i want to run a really large dish on the rear wheels which are going to be 22's as well.
