Wrong... if you cut the frame first, there is a larger chance for the dimensions to get tweaked in the process. Its really not that hard to clean the frame where you are going to weld with the stock C-channel frame.. You are just using the wrong tools.

1. Lay the tubing in first. 2x4 fits perfect in the box up front.

2. Brace across the bottom of the stock frame, Weld top of 2x4 and bottom to tubing to stock frame slowly. Trust me, brace it.. I did it without bracing it, and my rails tweaked. I had to straighten them out afterwards, it was a pain in the ass, and more time spent doing it... This is the biggest reason to not cut the frame first and then weld in the tubing.

3. Cut the top off the frame, and blend the rear section in behind the cab.

after pic.. Temporary ghetto x-member holding the rails straight at that time.

When you do that, you have to worry about raising your trans and everything else. You have more clearance for the d-shaft and the trans if you cut off the top and not the bottom. Plus, its too easy with 2x4 tubing on stock chevy 1500 rails up front to not do it. 2x4 fits in there perfect.

i took my trans. member out and i cut a piece of the top rail on the drive about 12 inches how would i tell if the rails tweaked any?

should have measured multiple places on the frame in stock form before hacking it up. There is alot of forethought that goes into something like a bodydrop.
