when did yota go to EFI?

I am looking at a 1989 truck with a 2bbl carb. I looked it up on carfax and its original. So, I was just curious as to when toyota switched their trucks to efi. I think I'm gonna buy this truck because I think I can do more with the engine to improve it than I could with efi. What do you think? It has a four speed trans too, anything special about those?

I think 83, i had an 83 that was carb, but i think it was the first year efi was available

nope 1985 was the first year if i remember right because that was also the last year of the straight axle so to have a 4x4 85 and efi was a good thing

85 is correct. Also stopped putting solid axles in the front that year.

You guys are absolutely right. I remember we had an old 1985 van that my dad bought brand new. He wasn't going to buy one at first but then they came out with EFI and it ran a lot better than the carbed ones. I also found out that they still offed carbs on our trucks until 1990, but they had so many vacume switches and canisters and hoses that it would be way more difficult to work on than EFI. So my new plan is to buy a 1984-85 truck and put a v8 in it because they will be smog exempt in 1-2 years, and its probably going to take me at least that long to do it up right.

i have an 89 toy that is a carb'd 4 speed..they were the cheapest ones you could get..usually a fleet model

I had an 89 4spd carb toy, best truck I ever owned.

Mine is an 89, with a carb. My thinking is that they found a warehouse full of carb motors in 88 and decided to use them up, I have seen 1 early 1990 model with a carb also. What is really strange is that in any 1989 model vehicle for North America it was law that the engine have a feedback system (O2 sensor and computer), for some strange reason, the 89 22R motors did not have an O2 sensor, but did have a basic emissions computer, They were not a feedback system, somehow snuck through the legal cracks!!!

It EFI was an upgrade option untill mid 92 or 93 I believe
