I found a 93 rearend at a salvage yard today. All I really need is the axle housing and axle right? I should be able to use my stock internals from my truck and transplant them into the 93 rear, right? I found a set of 20s but I need at least an on each side to lay back down. I really need more like 2 or 2 1/2 inch on each side. To what I understand the pre taco rear is at least 2 inches shorter on each side. Can someone that has measured or done this swap help confirm this for me? thanks peeps

the 89-95 rear end is 2 7/8" shorter from hub to hub than a taco rear end. si if you need 2" on each side... hmm.. u aint gonna cut it with the rear end from a older pickup. i cant say for sure, but i dont think you can put your taco 3rd member in the pre-taco housing and use the pre-taco axles. why dont you just keep the pre-taco rear end all together??? the gear ratio is the same in the 89-95 toyotas as is in the tacomas. the tacoma drive shaft bolts right up to the pre-taco 3rd member, so why switch and match parts? just swap the whole rear end. the axle housing and 3rd member hasn't changed over the years, just the length of the housing. you MAY be able to swap the 3rd members like you were asking, but i dont think there is a need. the pre-taco's axle bolts up to the tacos driveshaft. so just put er' in bud. holla back if u need some more info.

i just put a pre-taco rear in my 99 taco...it was out of an 89 toyota and it was 4 inches narrower...2 inches on each side...with my 3 1/4 bd, wheels fit perfect under the bed again, with plenty of room around the frame too...

i think the easiest thing to do would be to swap to a 9 inch ford. anyone can narrow them, there cheap if you get em from a junk yard, and there built like a f#$%^& tank. i got one for 100 from a friend and narrowed it 17 inches to tuck my 20 by 10s. just my 2 pennies.

hmmm... wes you sure you measured right? cause i'm positive on my measurements. everyone says they're 4" shorter but i had the two side by side and measured mine. you might be right..

I am runnin a 94 yota rearend on mine and it was around 2" shorter on each side. Rocky's taco is tuckin 20's and he has a 86 yota rearend and its an inch or two narrower than the 94 rearend.

Best bet is to get an early Toyota axle. My truck has a 55" wide axle. They ran that axle from 79-83. The 73-78 axles are 53" wide. That should be plenty narrow to tuck your wheels.

Also be aware that there are two different differentials that came in the 2WD Toyota axles. If you don't get the entire axle, you need to make sure it has the same differential as your axle. Easiest way to tell is where the highest stud is in the axle. One differential has it at about 11 o clock, the other is right at the top.

My buddy Joel has a 91 rear axle with 20's body dropped and they fit fine they are like stated above 2" shorter on each side. Good luck
