I bought a skin a couple years ago and had a body shop install it and paint it. The past couple of months I noticed a couple bubbling areas and now there is a large rust area coming through. Are these supposed to be welded right on top of the old skin, or are you supposed to remove the underlying metal first? Not really experienced with body work, but I guess I better start learning so I know the stuff is done right!

is it a full skin or just covers the tailgate and not the pan too

ok when you say "tailgate skin" are you refering to just a new skin on the actual tailgate like a new door skin or are you talking about a tailgate skin where you would remove your tailgate up and just weld the new skin in and not have a tailgate anymore?

thats called a combo when you remove the tailgate and weld in the tailgate skin and roll pan as one piece.

What you need to do is drill out all the stock spot welds on the tailgate and weld on the new skin to the tailgate with the old skin removed. If its a combo, you remove the entire skin and cut out the old rollpan, if there is a stock roll pan like on a mazda or toyota.

^^^Thank you, I know what a combo is.

What i am saying is i don't know if you are refering to just a skin or a combo. Tell us which one and then go from there. Skin = remove old skin from tailgate and replace with new skin. Combo = remove tailgate and bumper/rollpan and put in 1x1 bracing and weld on the combo.

either way the shop must not have used rust through primer &/or never sealed the inside of the 'gate (even with undercoating or spray paint or something) assuming they drilled the old one off at all?!?!

if they didnt drill out the old spot welds it would trap moisture no matter what

ifi ts rustin underneath( bubbles) take it back!

Yeah, it's just the skin. Tailgate is still functional and there is a welded on roll pan with the dropped tag. It looks like they just welded the new skin on top of the factory tailgate and the moisture built up and finally started to surface. They didn't remove anything when they installed it. This is obviously the wrong way to do it, yeah?
