air/hydro mutt

Has anyone ever ran air into hydraulic cylinders? I don't know if it would even be enough pressure to lift or not. Do any hydro companies make a cylinder that uses air but you can still use coil over springs and cups? Thanks for the help.

ive seen hybrid setups that use an airbag to push hydraulic fluid into a ram tho

I've never seen air pumped into a cylinder and used as the suspension on a vehicle. However, Kris Dye, used hydraulic cylinders with pressurized air to move his "custom 4 wheeler" around, and he is also using them to lift the body of his truck off of the frame.

you can run air in a hydraulic cylinder or there are places you can order cylinders from built for your application

does anyone know what pressure it takes to move a hydro cylinder with air. obviously it will depend on the size vehicle but would it be comparable to say a shAIM air cylinder?

there was an artical in lowrider mag about this 3-4 months ago. they did the rear of a caddy to three wheel on some type of air cylinder similar to a hydro cylinder.
there was a couple topics about it in the air suspension forum on layitlow.

the main problem if you want to use a hydraulic cylinder normally used on a car/truck but want to run air is you cannot generate enough force with the air. if you know anyone with a car on hydraulics with pressure gauges watch, normally its usually atleast 3000psi to lift the front end of a car. that and your dealing with a fluid that has a very very low compression rate compared to air. to determine the correct bore cylinder you need, figure out how heavy you are lifting and if there is any mechanical advantage invovled to determine the true/correct weight then divide that by your psi you want to run. that will tell you how many square inches the bore of your ram has to be.

kyle's right, hydraulic pressure packs a lot more psi than air, seems like a lot of BS to try to run air through a cylinder anyway
