the 85 4wd 6 lug Toyota rears are about 3" narrower than the Mazdas

if you doing the yota axle, you should do the 5 lug man, the wheel choice would be so much better, thats what I think do, later.

A courier rear axle is 4 inches norrower than your current axle. It shares the same lug pattern as you have now and the rear flex hose bolts right up. You will need the pinion mounting flange, u joint and tube yoke from the courier as well. A driveshaft shop can cut the tube yoke from your existing driveshaft and weld the courier one in its place. Add a new u joint to the mix for good measure and then bolt it up to the new rear end and you're set. If you are still running leaves in the rear you will need to move the mounting pads on the courier axle outwards to match the centre to centre of the leaves in your truck. I hope this helps you a bit.

It's the Ford Courier/Mazda Sundowners. The trucks right before the 86+ B-series. 85 and earlier, I don't remember the exact years.

Thanx Russ. As far as where to find a Sundowner/Courier axle try a local wrecking yard that has a computerized parts link network. They are getting harder to come by but it shouldn't be imposible to find one. I can't remember the exact year that they started making those trucks but I know that the last couriers were sold in 82 I believe and the Sundowner ran until 84. There is a small difference in gear ratios between the rear ends in the automatic trucks as compared to the standard shifts . They will probably ask you which one you want when they are doing the search for you at the wreckers.Either one will work really, the difference is fairy small. I know I have it written down somewhere, I'll find it and post it up for you when I do.

Update: the gear ratio for a courier with an auto trans is 3.90 and the manual trans rear axle ratio is 3.31. I also neglected to mention that the emergency brake cable from the 86-93 hooks right up with now hassles or modifications when doing the courier swap.
