Ok, so here's the deal. I have a 93 cherokee with a shaven tailgate. I used a fiberglass panel from a work van/truck and used the 3m body panel adhesive that mixes in the gun (can't remember the number...its the expensive black stuff used for door skins) and bondoed over that. It's been a while now and I'm getting a crack all around the edge. I've been told it's from the glue exanding in the heat or could be from slamming the tailgate...which I don't really do.

This was all done before I learned how to fiberglass, so now I need help. Should I try and get all the bondo out, leave the truck panel in, sand everything down and try to fill the once-bondoed gap with fiberglass or should I tear out the panel and make my own out of fg? Also wondering how to have the glass bond best with my fiberglass tailgate.... I was thinking maybe holes to allow the resin to seep through and keep it in place...

Not really sure how to post images here, so here are the urls for the only pics I had from it.

you used panel bond 8235 very good stuff for gluing on metal panels and such the crack is in the bondo being to thick.

i think hes trying to shave the hole on a fiber glass hatch. youll have to bond it all together with fiberglass matt and resin. panel bond is only for steel, aluminum, and stainless steel and only works in a compression application(door skin/quaterpanel etc)

so should i tear the panel out and use resin to "glue" it in? will fresh resin bond with the fiberglass of the hatch with enough sanding or should i try and fill over the hole with just resin and mat?

If the hatch is made out of SMC (which it should be) you cant fiberglass it will fail again. The best stuff I know of is a Fusor product # 100EZ. It is about $40 a tube but it works. It is heat set (you have to heat it to 140 for 15 min or let it sit overnight) and you cant do body work over it you have to prime it and then use glaze over that. They have 102 which is a cosmetic stuff that cures in about 15 with out heat. And I would use the panel to fill in the hole. If you have a big gap you can use fiberglass cloth (not mat) to make it stronger, you put a layer of the fusor down and then press the cloth in it then cover it more fusor. If you want to do it one more time get the fusor 100EZ. oh and sry for the book.
