i have always scuffed up the lights with a scotch brite pad and put some dark grey paint in the clear and re cleared the lights it works good and shines....and thats how the bodyshops do it here but i dont know i'm sure there are better ways

Mixing some gray or black paint in the clear is the way to go! Be careful and dont make it to dark.

The right way to do it is......

scuff the lights with a red scotchbrite or 800 wet sanded....

clean the lights with soap and water, rinse very well and dry.

Get some intercaot clear and mix in some kandy black toner, not too much, the best way to tell how dark it is is by mixing the paint with a stir stick, then pull the stir stick out, wait a couple seconds and that is the aproximate colour it will be.

Wipe the lights with a tack rag, and mist on one coat of the kandy mixture. Wait around 15 minutes then put on an even medium coat, if the colour is dark enought then wait about 1/2 hour - 1 hour then clear the lights with a catalyzed clear.

If you don't wanna do it yourself buy a spare set, send em to me, and I'll do it for like 30 bucks plus shipping with PPG paint.

Ive done 3 sets of taillights, all you do is buy a can of smoke paint from a hobby store. I just cleaned the lights with some simple green and dried them and sprayed. They came out perfect and shiny.

The only proble with modelstore paint is that it is not UV fade resistant, not catalyzed, and wont be as durable as automotive based paints....

That said, yes I have done it that way, and it looked great for a couple months or so.

I ordered some stuff called night shades from Jegs and scuffed the tail lights then sprayed it on the lights after that I cleared them with just a spray can clear.
