Im building a center console for my suburban i made it outta 3/4" MDF and used speaker cloth to strech over it. I sprayed the mdf with 3M adhesive and streched the speaker cloth over it until it was smooth. When i started layin down the resin it cause some of the glue to break loose. Any suggestions on where to go from here. Should i lay down another layer of cloth and staple it tight then glass it? or will that leave air bubbles or should i just try another layer of resin on top of what i did to try and make it work? good thing this is just a test console before i acctually build the real one. Flame away guys any ideas/suggestions/comments are appericated.

Make it all out of MDF then make all of the raised pieces you want (speaker rings), then take fleece and stretch it tight over it and staple it on the bottom. Then lay resin on the fleece. Then take strips of mat and lay it on the resin covered fleece.

Good luck

did the fabric rip away from the top or was it just peeling up a little on the sides? As long as its still taught then staple or hot glue down the parts that started to peel up because you will siand it flush after its all cured.

using fleece will make it soak WAY too much resin, and actually be more brittle than with a thinner material like speaker cloth or polydex (polyester/spandex mix). remember, resin isn't structural, its the mixing of the resin and matt that makes the strength.

The 3m adhesive spray probably wasn't a good choice on glue, something more along the lines of a two part glue, like CA Glue would have been a better choice. That being said, staples will workjust as well. If possible, rabbit the very bottom edge of the console with a router, this gives you something to staple to if you are removing all the material.

If not, stapling at the side walls isn't a big problem, just shoot them pretty hard so they don't bulge in your glass work causing more sanding, even by a little.

3/4 inch mdf is thick...I wouldnt use anything thicker than half. The way we do it at work is to stretch the grill cloth over the consol and glue it to the bottom with the 3m glue. after you have resined the grill cloth you can use a flush trim router bit to trim the edges. oh ya dont get resin on the glue or it will come loose.

staple the cloth to the mdf and it will solve the prob of the fabric pulling away. The solvents in the resin soften the glue.
