Wear Safety Glasses!

After today.. I'm going to start stressing remembering to grab some glasses/goggles before doing certain things. I know I've grinded/sanded/used nail guns, etc. with no eye safety.. but today my dad was putting up wood trim in his new house and a nail got stuck in the gun and shot out all bent up from a distance of about 1 foot from the gun to his eye, and bounce off his eyeball and fly another 20 feet or so across the room. He said it didn't hurt too bad, because he's used to stuff flying at him (construction) but his vision got blurred, and he said that he had never in his life had that happen. He got worried because his friend had a tree limb pop him in the eye and cause permanent damage.. and when I looked at his eyes it was like one was bright greenish-blue, while the other (one that got hit) was darker brownish, milky looking. He already has some minor eye problems, from just always being in the sun/saw dust flying around at work, etc. but this is serious, the eye specialist said it's major trauma to his eye. They couldn't tell for sure because "too many particles floating around" whatever that means, but his pupil is huge while the colored part is milky/dark still. They gave him steroid eye drops and said to go back tomorrow.. It's worrying me though, I feel bad.. hope it'll be fine.

So what I'm trying to say is, even if you're in a hurry just try to find a pair of safety glasses.

That and damn jack stands!

im not so big on safety glasses, but i havent been under the truck or grinding much lately. when i am, i try to grab them. jackstands I put them under NO MATTER WHAT. even if the truck is on all 4's and not bagged they are still there just to be safe!

I had a buddy in high school who was building a rabbit cage in the AG shop. He went to drive a 16 penny nail and the nail shot out like it's happened to me so many times. But it stuck him in his eye. Literally the nail was sticking out of his eye and would move whenever he moved his eye. He went through so many surgeries trying to fix it. Eventually he lost the eye. Safety googles are very important. With that said, I hardly ever use them. But I always use jack stands no matter what.

Make sure to wear goggles that fit tight around your eyes....my buddy had on safety glasses (with side panels) while working on the lathe. A small stainless chip flew up and still managed to get around the glasses. The chip was a curly one and basically screwed itself into his eye ouch. It's worth the time - to protect your eyes. I've even worn safety glasses under a face mask while on the grinder after a piece flew under my mask.

Besides, if you guys damage your eyes you won't be able to look at all us pretty women...LOL, you'll have to feel your way around without knowing what you're gettting yourself into haha

I always wear glasses but sometimes shit does get past em. i think i get more stuff in my eye wearing glasses then my buddy does who NEVER wears them. Just my luck I guess. I cant stand those visor things though.

I have 4 pairs of safety goggles, so I'm never stuck looking for them forever. Keeps me from getting pissed and turning on the grinder without them. I've been to the eye doctor 3 or 4 times now, getting shit dug out of my eye. Like Joel said, I still sometimes get shit in my eyes with goggles on. And I know people that never wear them, and never get anything in their eye.

Yeah I usually keep a couple sets on the go. Gloves and googles I always have extras. i am so bad for putting shit down and then spending half my time looking for it. Which is why my tape measure and center punch are painted neon green now. haha
