i just picked up a 84 pickup l/b jap style and it has the 22r engine w/ a/t trans, stock carb. i am having issues with the engine running about 3/4 hot on the gauge and also an oil leak that i am not sure where it is coming from (i think the head gasket). the engine has approx 146k all orig. miles. i do not know much about the engine, i was wondering does this engine normally run warm. and if the 22r had issues with blowing the head gasket.

also how hard is it to change out??

thanx

well if it is leaking on the front of the motor it is probably the timing chain cover gasket. Just get a gasket kit and well do what I did and replace them all head gasket and the whole 9 yards of course mine has 290,000+ on it but runs like a top I would also do the timing chain while you are in there. As far as it running hot it could be a number of things start by flushing the cooling system and changing the thermostat. It could be a clogged radiator too. Just too many things to pin point what is causing it.

Check that no emissions in coolant system, the 22r's are known for a head leakage problem! Not just the head gasket. The oil leak be be at the oil pump, they crack over time!

well when mine went thru the phase of runnin hot,i ended up changing the rad(clogged),timing cover(i changed everything though),and a head gasket mine is at 200k and it runs GREAT!

might also be a valve cover gasket...mine is doing that in the back driver side. and somehow the oil filter backed out a bit and leaked there.
