How I would go about doing would be block the dings down with 80 grit, then grind the un-scuffed lowspot with 24 or 36 or so, to bare metal, then apply filler. Block that with 80 then either re-wipe if not straight, or move straight to blocking with 180 then feather-edge that with 180 on a D.A. Then primer that.

As far as the small bare metal spots, don't even worry about it. Being that the spots are fairly small, if not then you could even use some aerosol etching primer, such as SEM, and dust a couple coats of that on there before the filler primer. -one of the many ways to do it.

Keystone makes a sweet primer that I have been using it is 3n1 depending on the mix it is a DTM (DIRECT TO METAL)/HIGH BUILD/SEALER. I like it cause I can buy a kit that has the reducer and primer. I only need 2 cans on the shelf instead of 3. Not sure where you live but I know keystone is all over. The one around here is just around the corner.

the primer that i had is like 70 bucks for the gallon......my question is if i put body filler over bare metal wont it rust under the mud

No it won't rust under the mud. The correct way is to mud directly over metal. The mud creates its own seal over the metal to protect it... And that is ASE standards

i LOVE keystones DTM primer. it sands SOOOO nice, specially if i put basecoat in it to tint it a lil bit. i alwasy put a lil slow reducer in it, makes it lay down better.
