i work at a salvage yard and we recently got in a mazdaspeed protege turbo and was wondering if anyone knows if this motor has the same block as the mazda b2000/2200 would love to drop that in my truck i have the whole harness and everything right there.

dont do it. not because its a ton of work...but because those motors are complete crap. my brother had an 03.5 laser blue protoge speed. those motors are TERRIBLE. wastegate goes at about 50,000 miles, and the actual turbo isn't far behind it.

we traded it in ASAP. the motor is setup for FWD, your turck is rear. That in and of itself will present problems. Not to mention it mounts left to right, not front to back.

I wouldn't try it. Far too much work for a shitty motor.

thanks for the input man i appreciate it but i wasnt worried it was front wheel drive the kia motor that bolts into the mazda is out of a front wheel drive as well but thanks on the heads up on the turbo and wastegate issue but that can be replaced with a upgrade still need to know if this is a similer block such as the kia will my tranny and mounts bolt up to it?

the kia motor is RWD, only the new sportages with a different engine are FWD.

but thats not usually the biggest problem. The mazdaspeed motor is a different family of engine than the truck, so right away you need oil pan/trans adapter/motor mounts, not to mention a new intake setup and probably to re plumb the turbo not to hit the steering. Maybe the miata trans will work, but the new one is electronic, so you will be real friendly to a software programmer.

A lot of work. Its been my observation that 99.99999% of people who attempt swaps like this quit before they start. There is a percentage, .00001%, that actually do it, and pioneer the swap for everyone else. Usually, the second guy to do it spends about 10 tousand dollars less in making it work than the first guy did. Just my observations.

thanks russ i appreciate you chiming in on this i havre to yank the motor and tranny out of it tommorrow because we sold the tranny and if it wasnt to much work i was gonna take the motor home so much for that lol thanks alot though ofr all the input very helpful as usual

protege turbo 1.8 is the bp engine, same as a miata. Miata RWD trans will work, but like russ-d said- you are building motor mounts, new trans crossmember, driveshaft, not too mention re plumbing everthing, maybe able to use a miata intake manifold-

But all that work for what? A 1.8 BP? Hardly worth the effort. Go get a FE3 and save your time

sure they can, but the majority of them that have been tampered with AT ALL, or run hard AT ALL hit fuel cut on hot or cold days, it doesn't matter. 3/4 gas and your jumpin all over the place because of it. My brother had that happen, because he manually boosted it, broke 3 motor mounts, a tranny mount, and god knows what was wrong on the inside of the motor. I wouldn't want to know.

They are also terribly inefficient...
