We lifted the front of my girlfriends 1998 Toyota Tacoma, and one of the front CV Axle boots (dont know if that is even what it is called) has split and blown grease/oil all over the front end. We are going to replace it as soon as possible, but is it something I should worry about, even if she doesn't use the 4 wheel drive?

Also how do you get the axles out to replace the boots? I figure we should replace all 4 of them at once, since her truck already has 170,000 miles. What about cost for each boot?

And what about all the grease/oil that came out? What kind of fluid is that, and how do I refill it/replace it?

Thanks

go to the dealer and get a boot kit and buy a manual. its to complex to explain but they are very easy to replace just messy from the grease

BOOT KITS LIST 33.84 PER SIDE SO YOUR LOOKIN AT LIKE 68 FOR THE WHOLE SET FROM A DEALER.

Thanks for looking that up. That's not too bad, I was expecting it to be more...

Thats not too expensive, but you need to get it done before the axles fail from not having all their grease!

Are the axles still spinning even though its not in 4 wheel drive? How do I regrease everything, and what kind of grease should I use?

Well the truck is coming off the road tonight. I'm going to go by Toyota at lunch (its less than a mile away) and hopefully they have them in stock.
I'm going to have her drive my Ranger while I'm working on her truck, hopefully I can get it done today or tomorrow.

go to napa or autozone and you can buy the grease there.
probly less that $10 for all of it.

Well the kit came with all of the grease so I don't have to worry about that...

Thanks for all your help.

Is there anything I should check for wear? Just to make sure it didnt get messed up when all the grease came out?
