I was thinking of putting a new muffler on my girlfriends 1998 Tacoma, I think she is mainly concerned with sound and not really performance, so I dont want to replace the whole exhaust system, just the muffler. What would be a good muffler to put and, that would give it a lower sound, but not so loud it would wake up people in the neighborhood.

I was thinking a Flowmaster, but what series? Would 40 series be too loud?

Forgot to mention its a 2.4L...

Now that I think about it, would it be worth it to spend the money and get a cat back system for it? When I drive it I notice it's underpowered... lol

What would be a good kit to get that is under $500? I think Gibson is cheaper, is it any good?

I have Gibson stainless cat back on my Dodge Ram and I like the way it sounds...but it was supposed to be "bolt-on". I fought it for a whole weekend, then ended up taking it to my muffler guy. He cut it up and re-worked most of it to make it fit. If I had it to do again, I would have had the muffler guy add some Flow Masters and been done. It would have saved me about 500 bucks. You aren't gonna get any noticible HP gains anyway. Your truck will just sound faster.
